What are the benefits of Story Studio?
Hello again, friends! In my last post I talked all about the Story Studio framework, and how it can be used to inspire homeschool writing. There so many benefits of Story Studio, and I am excited to share some of them with you today.
Story Studio Engagement is high
Even the most reluctant writers are excited when the loose parts come out. And honestly, can you blame them? One of the key benefits of Story Studio is that it is truly hands on learning at its finest. Placing out a variety of materials, and switching things up often, ensures that kids continue to be inspired to touch, play, and explore.
There is always something to write about
By the time the pencils and paper come out, learners have had ample opportunities to brainstorm, manipulate, and talk through their stories. Young writers have a solid idea to start from before putting pencil to paper.
Authentic problem solving through play
Learners are given a lot time to work through their stories. Because of this, they have plenty of opportunities to solve issues that arise as they are presented.
Builds confidence in writing
In Story Studio, everyone has a story to tell. The stories developed are open ended. This allows learners to draw from their own unique experiences.
Increased creativity and Decreased story violence
The stories developed in Story Studio revolve around the loose parts you choose to put out. Because of this, my experience has shown a decrease in the amount of stories involving guns or other violent acts. I often place items like small animal puppets or plastic creatures out for learners to use. This has led to a lot more stories about creative animal adventures, and a lot less about video games and war.
Story studio provides access points for all learners
Story Studio activities are super easy differentiate. This makes these activities a great way to meet students where they are at. A young writer who is keen and thriving is free to take their stories where they are inspired to go. More struggling writers can orally retell their stories. This helps to remove any written output barriers.
Young writers are inspired to increase volume
In Story Studio, learners have ample time to talk through their stories. Because of this, they know where they are going with their writing by the time they pick up their pencils. This removes the dreaded “writer’s block” issues that can come with the development of a new piece of writing. In addition, their loose parts creations can provide an engaging visual to go back to when they get stuck.
Great for older learners too!
Many believe this educational framework is best suited to younger learners. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. This is a great teaching strategy for all learners! I truly believe intermediate, middle, and high school students can benefit from the deep thinking, brainstorming, and idea development that the framework of Story Studio provides.
I hope this post inspires you to pull out the loose parts and try the Story Studio framework with your own learners! Let me know how it goes by shooting me a message on Instagram @creativeclassroomcore22 .
