Inspiring Homeschool novel studies

As a homeschooler, finding the right books to inspire young learners and encourage a love of reading can be a challenge. There are so many options out there that it can be hard to know where to start. But have no fear! I’ve put together this list of five of my very favorite homeschool novel studies. I have tried to include some tried and true classics as well as some more modern favorites. I hope this list helps make the homeschool reading experience enjoyable and engaging for both you and your learners.

Holes by Louis Sachar

This quirky and exciting book is one of my all time favorites. The story follows Stanley Yelnats IV as he is sent away to Camp Green Lake for a crime he didn’t commit. While at camp, Stanley is forced to dig holes in the desert heat all day long in an effort to build character. Throughout the novel, Stanley comes face-to-face with his own personal challenges as well as those of others around him. This engaging book makes for an excellent study in character development and problem solving.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

This classic coming-of-age story follows two groups of teenage boys—the Greasers and the Socs—as they navigate life in the small town of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Told from the point of view of a teen boy named Ponyboy Curtis, readers get an inside look at what it’s like growing up in a divided society. This book provides great opportunities for discussion about themes such as loyalty, identity, classism, friendship, and justice.

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

In this charming tale, Roz the robot washes ashore on an island after her ship sinks during a storm. Though she is scared at first, Roz quickly learns how to survive on her own in the wild with help from some friendly animals she meets along the way. Not only does The Wild Robot provide plenty of fun plot twists and turns; it also teaches readers important lessons about self-reliance, adaptation, and friendship.

This unforgettable novel follows the adventures of August Pullman. August is a young boy who has been homeschooled his entire life due to facial deformities caused by a rare medical condition. When he starts attending public school for the first time, he must learn to navigate uncharted waters with courage and kindness. While doing so, he is faced with adversity from classmates who don’t understand him or his situation. This beautiful story features relatable characters and moving themes. It explores key topics such as bullying, self-acceptance and resilience.
